Choosing The Perfect Sofa

Choosing the perfect sofa for your lounge or living room space is never easy and that’s largely because more than anything it is the piece of furniture that you have to live with! A sofa doesn’t just need to look good and complement the other pieces of furniture, curtains, floor and overall look and feel of the room but it needs to be comfortable too.

The first thing to look for is the colour that you think will look good in your room. If you want to lighten the overall tone of the room and create a feeling of space then opt for a light colour such as cream or beige. If you do decide to choose a light coloured sofa then it is important to consider how often you will need to clean it. With young children around a spillage could be round the corner at any moment!

If you want to create a feeling of depth then a darker sofa might work well, although in gloomy rooms with poor natural light this should be considered carefully. If you want a more contemporary sofa then maybe a red or blue might work for you but beware of this more flamboyant style as its not to everyone’s taste and will only suit homes with a modern feel.

Next you probably want to look at the type of material. If you think your sofa is going to be with you for a while and want something that works well as it ages then you can’t go far wrong with a leather sofa. Leather is easy to clean and also actually develops more character with age. Many retailers have cottoned onto the appeal of worn leather and actually charge extra for ‘antiqued leather’.

If you want a light coloured sofa then fabric is a much better choice than leather. Coarse fabrics look good but might be a bit ‘itchy’ so make sure you choose well. Most retailers will supply sample books of materials if requested, although these days many charge for the luxury!

In terms of size, you must make sure that the sofa doesn’t overpower the rest of the room, especially with a corner sofa. Having the biggest sofa in the world is great but if it leaves you little room then you may want to re-evaluate. For the ultimate lounging sofa experience its well worth checking out reclining sofas as these make good use of the space but offer the option of a more sedentiary position!

It’s always a good idea to go and try a few sofas out in store to check they are going to be comfortable but once you have done this, check to see if you can get the same or better online. Prices for sofas online are much cheaper as the retailers can drop margins due to a reduced cost base through not havingto cover the cost of huge stores. If you like Leather sofas then Furniture Choice have an excellent range and also retailers like Next and Heal and Son have much more extensive ranges online.Plus, there are frequently sales and voucher codes to be used which can save even more.

Happy sofa hunting and if you are curious to know what sofa I have – its a brown leather number, which works perfectly with my room!!
