The Affordable Style of Scandinavian Design

We’re all familiar with the sleek, clean lines of Scandinavian design, but how did this effortlessly stylish style of furniture originate? During the 1950s,  in the three Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, as well as nearby Finland, a movement formed with the high ideals of ensuring that furniture possessed of style, beauty and functionality should be available and affordable for all.

During the early days of the movement, a prestigious award – the Lunning Prize – was awarded to outstanding Scandinavian designers, and brought global attention to the developing school of design, raising the profile of the burgeoning Scandinavian aesthetic and of the designers and manufacturers who brought the simple, unfussy elegance of this new style of furniture into homes the world over. The Lunning Prize was discontinued in 1970, but at that time the profile of Scandinavian design could hardly have been higher, as the minimalist, functional pieces that characterised the style could be seen in the apartments of film stars and ordinary families alike, bringing the ideal of great design not just to the rich and famous, but also to the great mass of the population.

Nowadays, Scandinavian furniture still retains its air of warmth, chic and simple functionality, as well as its affordable value and ease of use carries a huge range of Scandinavian-inspired furniture that will bring all the uncomplicated beauty that was envisioned by the movement’s founders into any home.

Another innovation of the Scandinavian style is the introduction of flat-packed furniture, which allowed the easy export and import of the new style of furniture internationally, as well as making it easy for almost anyone to get their new piece of furniture home without being forced to hire the moving van. This may not seem like a significant development, but in reality, the ability to convey a full size wardrobe in a compact car has changed our relationship with our furniture forever, so next time you see a stunning Scandinavian table or bed, stop and think about the skill, care and forward-thinking that brought this now-ubiquitous style to our homes.
